Las operaciones de un destino turístico se basan en los productos turísticos. En efecto, cuando éstos no corresponden a las necesidades y expectativas de los turistas, no se puede aprovechar plenamente el potencial de dicho destino. A pesar de ello, sólo unos pocos destinos centran su atención en el desarrollo y en la oferta de diversas atracciones y actividades que aporten un valor añadido al producto turístico. El Manual de la Organización Mundial del Turismo y Comisión Europea de Turismo sobre desarrollo del producto turístico presenta los elementos fundamentales del proceso de planificación y aplicación del desarrollo de un producto turístico, a saber: coordinación, consultas, colaboración y competencia; ilustra esos principios mediante una serie de conceptos y estudios de casos llevados a cabo con éxito en todo el mundo; y presenta ejemplos de mejores prácticas y referencias que los destinos pueden utilizar para evaluar sus propios sistemas y métodos de desarrollo de productos.
