As bacias hidrográficas deste estudo: ribeirão das Pedras, córrego da Cruz e córrego do Feijão, contribuintes do rio Jequitinhonha, estão localizadas na Mesorregião do Jequitinhonha, no município do Serro, e bacia hidrográfica do Alto Rio Jequitinhonha. O ZAP baseia-se em três índices de declividade básicos que são cruzados para gerar informações importantes sobre a bacia hidrográfica: (1) índices de potencial de uso conservacionista e descrição de unidades da paisagem, (2) avaliação da utilização hídrica da bacia e (3) levantamento do uso e ocupação da terra. A partir do cruzamento desses produtos elabora-se um diagnóstico completo sobre o uso dos recursos hídricos e sobre o uso e ocupação da terra. Os índices mostram que as bacias analisadas precisam de políticas bem delineadas para garantia de seus serviços ecossistêmicos. O nível de antropização se encontra ainda em níveis médios, mas com provável tendência de crescimento. A área possui uma forte migração motivada pelas suas belezas cênicas muito relacionadas à riqueza hídrica(cachoeiras e rios). No entanto, o baixo percentual de concentração de nascentes associado ao percentual de APP hídricas antropizadas, faz com que serviço ambiental de provisão de água venha a estar pressionado pelo uso e ocupação da terra.
