Comprendre la physiopathologie ou le problème des vertiges, c’est comprendre le cerveau et ses connexions nerveuses. Le mot lui-même est source de confusion. Les sensations en général sont difficiles à décrire, c’est pourquoi on les compare à la situation qui les provoque. Le mal de mer, communément appelé, est la sensation de tomber dans un trou ou d’être dans un bateau, étymologiquement il vient du mot marée et est la sensation du voyageur dans un bateau et le vertige (du lat. vertigo, -ĭnis, mouvement circulaire. Sensation de perte d’équilibre de type giratoire (le mot vertige vient d’ailleurs de 'vertere' : giration) ou d’instabilité avec balancement antéropostérieur. Il existe un autre terme appelé aussi cinétose, mais médicalement il est connu sous le nom de VERTIGO.
