Note: This is no longer the largest known prime number. The Mersenne project announced the discovery of a larger prime number on October 21, 2024. We have already published a new edition with the newly discovered number.A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 with no divisors other than 1 and itself. According to Euclid’s theorem there are infinitely many prime numbers, so there is no largest prime. The largest known prime number (as of March 2024) is 282,589,933 − 1, a number which has 24,862,048 digits when written in base 10. It was found via a computer volunteered by Patrick Laroche of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) in 2018.Here we present that number printed, in all its digits, in a single volume.

    Avner Ash / Robert Gross
Mathematicians solve equations, or try to. But sometimes the solutions are not as interesting as the beautiful symmetric patterns that lead to them. Written in a friendly style for a general audience, Fearless Symmetry is the first popular math book to discuss these elegant and mysterious patterns and the ingenious techniques mathematicians use to uncover them. Hidden symmetri...

  • The Gross-Zagier Formula on Shimura Curves
Shou-wu Zhang / Wei Zhang / Xinyi Yuan
This comprehensive account of the Gross-Zagier formula on Shimura curves over totally real fields relates the heights of Heegner points on abelian varieties to the derivatives of L-series. The formula will have new applications for the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and Diophantine equations. The book begins with a conceptual formulation of the Gross-Zagier formula in ter...

This book seeks to describe the rapid development in recent decades of sieve methods able to detect prime numbers. Linnik, but came into its own with Robert C. Vaughan and important contributions from others, notably...

  • The number pi with two million digits
    Philipi Schneider
The number π is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.Because its definition refers to the circle, π is found in many formulas in trigonometry and geometry, especially those related to circles, ellipses, and spheres. It is also found in formulas from other areas of science, such as cosmology, fractals, thermodynamics, mechani...
