Why should we study ethics if no one ethical theory is the right one? The answerTaking People Seriously: A Defense of Ethical Theory provides is a simple one. While all ethical theories are not alike, and no single theory is problem free, ethical theories do have something in common. They are all attempts at pulling people out of their self-centeredness and shifting their focus to finding the best way to treat others. Taking People Seriously gives students a fresh and original answer to basic philosophical questions about human conduct. It specifically argues against both ethical egoism and ethical relativism, the two most prevalent theories students hold when entering college. While the answer provided in the text is simple, putting it into practice requires skills of subtle discernment and nuance, and it explains why anybody and everybody would benefit from taking other people seriously. Taking People Seriously is designed for introductory or survey courses in normative ethics.Linda L. Williams holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Riverside. Now an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Kent State University in Ohio, Dr. Williams teaches courses in introductory ethics, ethical pluralism, and principles of thinking. Her articles have appeared in numerous journals including the Southern Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy Now, Philosophy Today, and the Journal of the History of Ideas. She is also the author of the book Nietzche's Mirror: The World as Will to Power.

Civil Disobedience argues that citizens should not permit their governments to overrule their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing their acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War, but the sentiments he expresses here are just as pertinent ...
