Suspense is an unfinished novel by Joseph Conrad, written between 1921 and 1922, shortly before his death. The novel is set during the Napoleonic Wars and takes place primarily in Italy. It focuses on the experiences of an English naval officer, Cosmo Latham, who becomes involved in a plot surrounding Italy’s struggle for independence.Though Conrad passed away before completing Suspense, the fragments of the novel reflect his characteristic themes, including questions of duty, honor, and personal sacrifice.
