Un’immagine è una riproduzione, rappresentazione o imitazione della forma fisica di una persona o di una cosa. Deriva dalla parola latina 'imitare'. L’inventore della fotografia è stato probabilmente il cinese, circa 3000 anni fa. Essi possedevano un materiale sensibile alla luce che trasferiva l’immagine delle foglie sulla superficie di vasi e recipienti. Nel 1841 l’inglese William Henry Fox Talbot sviluppò un approccio negativo e positivo alla produzione di immagini. L’immagine è un’imitazione artificiale della forma esterna di un oggetto e si riferisce all’immagine e alla somiglianza dell’oggetto. Il recettore si riferisce a qualcosa che risponde allo stimolo. I recettori di immagini utilizzati oggi in odontoiatria sono la pellicola, le combinazioni pellicola-schermo, i sensori elettronici utilizzati nell’imaging digitale e la tomografia computerizzata (TC). Alcuni sistemi di imaging medico, come i sistemi di fluoroscopia, utilizzano i raggi X come fonte di energia senza pellicola.
