El presente libro reúne los resultados del Proyecto HISTELEA (Historia Social de la Enseñanza de la Lectura y la Escritura en la Argentina) desarrollado por el equipo de Historia Social de la Educación del Departamento de Educación de la Universidad Nacional de Luján. Mediante el análisis de fuentes como los libros de textos, las disposiciones, los debates pedagógicos, y los relatos de experiencias; los diversos artículos reconstruyen cómo fue la enseñanza de la lectura y escritura en la Argentina desde la época colonial hasta los primeros gobiernos peronistas. Las polémicas sobre los contenidos y los métodos, las escenas de lectura y de escritura, la imposición de libros obligatorios, la censura y el control burocrático, el papel del editor, son temas analizados en su inscripción en la trama pedagógica y social de los momentos históricos en los que se produjeron, lo que constituye a esta obra en un aporte fundamental para comprender los debates actuales. 10
