Emergiram na modernidade diversos sistemas teóricos que se propunham a antever o futuro, antecipando com precisão científica os rumos seguidos pela História. Entre o final do século XIX e o século XX, esses sistemas sofreram graves questionamentos de diferentes fontes. A contestação das filosofias do progresso típicas do século retrasado tem sido um dos instrumentos empregados pelos críticos do Espiritismo para qualificarem-no como uma corrente de pensamento ultrapassada, atrelando-o ao Positivismo comteano. Outros ainda, dentro do próprio movimento espírita, se esforçam por identificar a proposta espírita com concepções utópicas e revolucionárias que ainda alimentam, cada uma à sua maneira, o desejo de controlar o processo histórico, muitas vezes tendo por único critério de valor um paradigma moral materialista. Este breve trabalho se dedica a refletir sobre o problema, começando por sintetizar o conteúdo das obras fundamentais de Allan Kardec a respeito do progresso, prosseguindo com um elenco de concepções filosóficas e religiosas que a humanidade produziu acerca do assunto e concluindo com um contraste entre o paradigma espírita e essas concepções. Adicionalmente, inclui uma abordagem da teoria social da sucessão das aristocracias, atribuída a Kardec e constante de Obras Póstumas.
