Los 39 escalones es la novela más conocida de John Buchan. Publicada originalmente en el Blackwood’s Magazine entre agosto y septiembre de 1915, fue publicada en forma de libro en octubre de 1915. Es la primera de las cinco novelas protagonizadas por Richard Hannay, un hombre común transformado en héroe debido a las circunstancias. La novela transcurre en 1914, en una Europa cercada por la guerra. Richard Hannay acaba de regresar a Londres desde Rodesia a fin de comenzar una nueva vida, cuando su vecino Franklin P. Scudder le solicita ayuda. Scudder ha descubierto un complot alemán para asesinar al primer ministro griego y robar los planes de guerra británicos. Unos días más tarde Scudder es asesinado en el departamento de Hannay. Entonces la única forma de demostrar su inocencia, es que Hannay continúe con la investigación y desenmascare a los asesinos._x000D_ _x000D_ Los 39 escalones es un thriller que entreteje de manera magistral los elementos de la conspiración política. Fue adaptada al cine en numerosas ocasiones, siendo quizá la versión más conocida la que dirigiera Alfred Hitchcock en 1935, protagonizada por Robert Donat y Madeleine Carroll.
