School business officials (SBOs) must, in many respects, serve as all things to all people in their workplaces. This includes having a wealth of knowledge on legal issues ranging from contracts to setting policy to constitutional matters involving the rights of students and teachers. The chapters in this book have been written by a diverse group of individuals with experience as educational leaders in schools and/or who possess significant expertise in school law. In light of the need to keep SBOs up-to-date on many issues in the ever-changing world of Education Law, this volume is divided into two parts. The first section deals with issues that primarily impact on the management of schools, and the second deals with the rights of students and teachers. Each of the chapters is designed to examine a specific area about which SBOs need information. While no single book can ever hope to cover all of the myriad of legal topics that SBOs and other educational leaders must master in their professional lives, this book will serve as an up-to-date and ready source of information to help keep them abreast of the many changes in the ever-evolving area of school law.

    Phillip Estes
After I began to practice, I realized that the attorneys that I practiced with were more often than not in a fowl mood. Some were never cheerful or pleasant. I enjoyed most of the work involved in my practice, but many of my associates did not. After about nine months, I decided that the main problem with the profession was that there were too many attorneys. The pressure o...

The United States Supreme Court was created in 1787 by the drafters of the Constitution almost as an afterthought, and it did very little in its early years. Surprisingly non-rigorous processes selected The Justices who inhabit these page...

Controversial Supreme Court decisions have barred organized school prayer, but neither the Court nor public policy exclude religion from schools altogether. In this book, one of America’s leading constitutional scholars asks what role religion ought to play in public schools. Kent Greenawalt explores many of the most divisive issues in educational debate, including teaching abo...

  • Law And The Bible
    George P. Fletcher
Like the facts of a legal case, the veracity of a Biblical story is irrelevant to its role of adding depth to a legal rule or axiom. Like the facts in a seminal Supreme Court case, the stories of the people in the Bible provide the context necessary to fully comprehend the values they adhered to and incorporated into law.  As you read the ten chapters in this volume, experience...

As well-established as the right to work is in the industrialized world, in many places it is neither as well-defined nor protected even though signatories to various international treaties profess their adherence to the lofty principles contained in the array of documents addressing what is recognized as a fundamental human right.
