O sistema imunitário evoluiu para distinguir o 'eu' do 'não-eu'. Os dois ramos da imunidade trabalham em estreita colaboração, sendo o sistema imunitário inato mais ativo no início da resposta imunitária e a imunidade adaptativa tornando-se progressivamente dominante ao longo do tempo. Os principais efectores da imunidade inata são o complemento, os granulócitos, os monócitos/macrófagos, as células assassinas naturais, os mastócitos e os basófilos. Os principais efectores da imunidade adaptativa são os linfócitos B e T. Os linfócitos B produzem anticorpos; os linfócitos T funcionam como células auxiliares, citolíticas e reguladoras (supressoras). Estas células são importantes na resposta imunitária normal a infecções e tumores, mas também medeiam a rejeição de transplantes e a autoimunidade. As imunoglobulinas (anticorpos) na superfície dos linfócitos B são receptores para uma grande variedade de conformações estruturais específicas.
