'I tip my hat,' an often repeated phrase of Cathy Brooks’ grandfather, James Brooks, was the inspiration for this military pictorial featuring the descendants of Cathy’s grandfather and other family members. The book merges her love for her family with photographs that showcase a family heavily invested in the military. Some of the most spectacular documents include the military and early voting records of Cathy’s great-great-grandfather Private David Singleton who served during the American Civil War from 1863-1865 in Company D of the 51st U.S. Colored Infantry from Mississippi. I Tip My Hat: A Granddaughter Reminisces with its six generations of photos and documents cements the family’s legacy for generations to come, hopefully opening the door to more portals of history.
