Wasser ist eine unverzichtbare natürliche Ressource für die Erhaltung des Lebens. Wasser ist jedoch nicht überall kostenlos. Fluoride im Trinkwasser können je nach Konzentration und Gesamtmenge, die aufgenommen wird, nützlich oder schädlich sein. Fluorid ist vor allem für Kleinkinder unter acht Jahren für die Verkalkung des Zahnschmelzes von Vorteil, wenn es innerhalb der zulässigen Grenzen von 1,0-1,5 mg/L vorhanden ist. Ein Überschuss an Fluorid im Trinkwasser verursacht Zahn- und/oder Skelettfluorose. Die indischen Normen für Trinkwasser empfehlen eine akzeptable Fluoridkonzentration von 1,0 mg/L und eine zulässige Fluoridkonzentration von 1,5 mg/L in Trinkwasser. Um die Fluoridkonzentration aus der kontaminierten Probe zu entfernen, wurden im Labor Eisenoxid- und Hydroxid-Nanopartikel sowie fluoridkontaminierte Wasserproben aufbereitet. Während der Verwitterung und der Zirkulation von Wasser in Gesteinen und Böden kann Fluorid ausgelaugt werden und sich im Grundwasser und in thermischen Gasen lösen. Der Fluorgehalt des Grundwassers ist je nach geologischem Umfeld und Art des Gesteins sehr unterschiedlich. Die häufigsten fluorhaltigen Mineralien sind Fluorit, Apatit und Glimmer.
