Nacido en la localidad francesa de Saujon, estudió derecho en París antes de dedicarse a la escritura. Su primer éxito literario llegó con la publicación de su novela El proceso Lerouge en 1866, que introdujo al personaje del policía Lecoq, su detective de cabecera en muchas más obras, y estableció muchos de los elementos que se han convertido en clásicos del género de la novela de misterio.
